Tobacco Policy
Definition:
Tobacco products are defined under this policy as any of the following:
- Any product containing, made, or derived from tobacco or nicotine that is intended for human consumption, whether smoked, heated, vaped, chewed, absorbed, dissolved, inhaled, snorted, sniffed, or ingested by any other means, including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, little cigars, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, or electronic nicotine devices.
Purpose:
To provide a clean and safe environment for personnel, visitors, and patients of FTEMS.
Directive:
Personnel are permitted to use tobacco products during their regularly scheduled work shifts and while on FTEMS property with the following guidelines:
- Tobacco may not be used while operating within the view of the general public or while carrying out official FTEMS business.
- Smoking may only be conducted outside of FTEMS buildings at the designated smoking station.
- Smoking under no circumstances is permitted inside any of the FTEMS buildings nor vehicles.
- OSHA regulations state that there shall be no smoking within 20 feet of any compressed cylinder including oxygen (29 CFR 1910.101b.) This rules out smoking in any ambulances or EMS response vehicle as well as garages or apparatus bays where EMS vehicles are housed.
- This prevents the inside of the FTEMS buildings and vehicles from smelling like smoke.
- Any tobacco products used while on FTEMS property must be cleaned up after use and never left sitting around should the general public visit our property.
